How to make perfumes at home?

If you feel like creating your own fragrance, begin with collecting the following items:

  • essential oils,
  • a dropper,
  • vodka mixed with spring water (80%),
  • glycerin,
  • a bowl to combine the ingredients in,
  • a dark glass bottle,
  • a bottle with atomizer.

Okay, once you have all the essentials, you can move on to creating your customized fragrances. The first step depends on choosing the right essential oils. Try to match three of them so they play the role of three fragrance notes:

  • base note – choose from cinnamon, vanilla, patchouli, sandalwood or cedar;
  • heart note – the most suitable ones are lemongrass, clove, nutmeg or ylang ylang;
  • head note – use rose, jasmine, lemon, lime, lavender or orchid.

Next, you can combine oils in the following way: 3 drops of base note, 2 drops of heart note and 1 drop of head note. When all the essential oils blend, it’s time for you to decide whether you need to add more of some aroma. However, remember to add no more than a drop and then mix the fragrance well. Also, I advise you to note down the proportions in case you would like to recreate the same fragrance someday in the future.

Another step requires you to add vodka. Follow the proportion: 5 drops of oil blend for 1/4 cup of vodka. Pour the fragrance to a dark glass bottle and left it for a several days. The more time you allow the essential oils to interfere with alcohol, the more intensive aroma you will obtain.

Now, add two spoons of distilled water. Combine and check if the aroma still appeals to you. If you find it too strong, add more water. After that, add glycerin that helps the fragrance remain on your skin longer. Finally, you can pour your aromatic blend into a phial with atomizer.

D.I.Y. Fragrances: Useful tips

If you want to create a truly wonderful and long-wearing fragrance, follow my pieces of advice:

  1. Don’t rush while mixing the essential oils. You nose might get a little confused while smelling the aromas. Therefore, to help it work better, prepare a freshly ground coffee or go out to take a few breaths of fresh air every few minutes.
  2. Did you know that essential oils are highly concentrated substances? They can damage your furniture and when used on skin (unless thinned down with water) they may cause redness.
  3. Resign from making your own fragrances if you are pregnant. The aromas of essential oils might give you a headache and cause nausea.
  4. Have in mind that just one drop of an essential oil might change the entire aroma you managed to compose. Therefore, this is so crucial to add just really tiny portions of essential oils.
